Why terminated harnesses exist

Engine wiring is the part of a swap that quietly consumes the project. The engine came out of one car and is going into another, so the factory loom is either missing, wrong length, or full of circuits for a body you no longer have. The usual answer is a flying-lead harness: a bundle of labelled wires from the ECU that you terminate yourself, one connector at a time, against a wiring diagram.

That works — MaxxECU flying-lead harnesses use high-quality automotive thin-wall cable with every wire printed with its function — but it is many hours of careful work and every crimp is an opportunity to create an intermittent fault that will haunt you.

A terminated harness moves that work to a factory. The connectors are already on. The lengths are already right for the engine. What is left is routing, securing and connecting the ECU side.

Available harnesses

Toyota 2JZ

Fits 2JZ with or without VVTi, and is configured for VAG 1.8T coil-on-plug conversion — the standard upgrade path for 2JZ builds moving away from the factory igniter and coil pack arrangement. Suits Supra MKIV engines in Supras, and 2JZ swaps into anything else.

BMW M50

Fits BMW M50B25, with or without VANOS. The M50 is one of the most-swapped six-cylinder engines in Europe, and MaxxECU supports VANOS variable valve timing natively, so the harness and the ECU cover the whole system.

Volvo T5

Fits the Volvo T5 engine from the V70N, 2000–2008. A common and well-liked five-cylinder turbo swap.

GM LS (GEN III and GEN IV)

Covers GEN III (5.7 L LS1, LS6) and GEN IV (6.0 L LS2, and 6.2/7.0 L LS3, LS4, LS7, LSX, LS9). The LS is the default V8 swap worldwide, and this harness pairs naturally with an 8-cylinder-capable ECU.

Running an LS on a STREET is possible in wasted spark, but you give up sequential injection. On a V8 that is a real compromise, and the step to a RACE or GEN2 TRACK is usually the right money.

Your build is a swap. The engine's factory loom is gone, wrong, or not worth saving. The engine is one of the four supported platforms. This is exactly the case terminated harnesses are made for.

Plugin ECU — the car still has its factory loom

Your car is standard and supported: Nissan S13/S14/S15, Skyline R32/R33/R34 GT-R, Mitsubishi EVO IV–VIII, Toyota Supra MKIV, BMW M54, Audi and VAG ME 7.5 family, Ford Focus RS MK2, Mustang Coyote, Corvette C6, Porsche 996 Turbo. A plugin adapter fits the factory ECU connector and needs no wiring at all. This is faster and cheaper than a terminated harness where it applies.

Flying lead — everything else

Unsupported engine, unusual sensor set, or a fully custom build. Every MaxxECU is available in a kit with a labelled flying-lead harness. Maximum flexibility, maximum labour. What to buy alongside a terminated harness

  • The ECU kit level that matches. The BASIC, STANDARD and PREMIUM kits differ in what harnesses and sensors they include. If you are buying a terminated engine harness, a BASIC or unit-only kit may make more sense than a STANDARD with a flying-lead harness you will not use. Check what is in the box before ordering.
  • Bosch LSU wideband sensor — LSU 4.2 or 4.9 for GEN1 ECUs, LSU 5.2 for GEN2. PREMIUM kits include one.
  • MaxxECU PDM20 — you are already rewiring the car. This is the moment to delete the fuse box and relay bank entirely: 20 programmable, PWM-capable, current-monitored outputs at up to 230 A, with terminated harnesses of its own (34-pin and 26-pin) available pre-built.
