MaxxECU RACE and RACE H2O: Knock Control, EGT and Eight Sequential Cylinders

MaxxECU RACE motorsport ECU with knock control and EGT inputs, front view

Quick answer: MaxxECU RACE is so far the most popular ECU in the entire MaxxECU line-up, and the first model in the range with knock sensor inputs and native EGT inputs. It runs up to 8 cylinders fully sequentially (up to 12 in wasted spark) with 8 peak-and-hold injector outputs at 8 A each, 8 ignition outputs, 9 low-side general-purpose outputs, 2 × +12 V sourcing outputs and 4 motor outputs for E-Throttle and other motor control. It has 2 knock sensor inputs, 8 TYPE-K/N EGT inputs to 1200 °C in a separate harness, a built-in Bosch LSU 4.2/4.9 wideband, a built-in 400 kPa MAP sensor and Bluetooth for MDash. Weight is 880 g. A fully waterproof RACE H2O variant is available for exposed installations — it is fine to mount in the engine bay.

Rocket Speed Shop is the official MaxxECU distributor for the Baltics. Below: what RACE adds over SPORT, and how it compares to the newer GEN2 TRACK.

Who the MaxxECU RACE is for

  • High-boost engines on pump fuel or E85 where knock detection is not optional. Two knock sensor inputs run on their own processor, separate from the main CPU and the trigger processor.
  • V8 builds running fully sequentially — 8 injector and 8 ignition outputs. LS, Coyote, M60/M62, 1UZ/2UZ/3UZ.
  • Engines where per-cylinder exhaust gas temperature matters — 8 thermocouple inputs wired straight in, sampled at 50 Hz, with EGT fuel correction and EGT-based power cut. On a high-power turbo build this catches a lean cylinder before it destroys a piston.
  • Drift, time attack, drag and circuit cars that need spare I/O for sensors, switches and safety strategies. Four extra digital/VR inputs handle four wheel speed sensors for real traction control.
  • Exposed installations — rally raid, buggies, open-wheel cars, or simply an ECU mounted in the engine bay. The RACE H2O variant is built waterproof.
  • 6-cylinder engines with staged injection — 8 injector outputs leave two spare on a six; with 8 cylinders all of them are in use.

Key features

Knock detection and control

Two knock sensor inputs handled by a dedicated processor. Knock control lets you run closer to optimal ignition timing safely, and pull timing automatically when detonation is detected rather than leaving a permanent safety margin on the table. This is the feature that separates RACE from everything below it.

Eight native EGT inputs

TYPE-K and TYPE-N thermocouples to 1200 °C / 2200 °F, supplied on a separate harness, sampled at 50 Hz — wired straight into the ECU with no amplifiers needed. An EGT sensor is not limited to exhaust gas, either — the same thermocouple inputs can measure any other temperature you care about, such as oil or coolant. Feeds EGT fuel correction (adds fuel when a cylinder runs hot) and EGT power cut (protects the engine when a threshold is crossed). Per-cylinder EGT is the fastest way to find an injector or ignition problem on an engine.

MaxxECU RACE automotive-grade Molex connectors

Eight peak-and-hold injector outputs

8 A per output, one or two high or low impedance injectors per output. Injector staging is supported, so a big-power build can run primary and secondary injectors from one ECU.

Four motor outputs

GPO 11–14 (2 A each) drive an electronic throttle body plus other motorised control. RACE can in principle run a second electronic throttle body too, but the second throttle takes two analog inputs with it, and that often leaves the build short of inputs. If two throttle bodies are part of the plan, we would recommend looking at the next unit up from the start.

Large I/O count

9 low-side outputs (GPO 1–8 and 10 at 2 A, GPO 9 at 5 A), 2 × +12 V sourcing outputs (GPO 15, 16 at 2 A), 6 extra 0–5 V analog inputs, 4 extra digital inputs of which the VR-capable ones suit wheel speed sensors, 2 extra temperature sensors, plus dedicated IAT, CLT and TPS. Analog inputs sample at up to 1000 Hz.

RACE H2O waterproof variant

Same electronics and same features in a fully water-protected package for powersports and exposed installations. It is also the variant to choose if the ECU is going to live in the engine bay.

Bluetooth, logging and gearbox control

Built-in Bluetooth for the MDash Android dashboard. 8 MB internal logging at up to 1000 Hz. CAN control of BMW DCT, VAG DSG and GEN1 ZF 8HP, plus sequential gearbox control with shift-cut.

When to consider a bigger MaxxECU

Leave yourself some headroom. A MaxxECU is very capable of controlling far more than just the engine, so it is good practice to choose a unit that leaves a few inputs and outputs in reserve. Ideas develop as the project goes on, and very often the wish list grows — spare I/O means there is something left to use when it does. The ECU is not something you swap later like a sensor: the connectors and harnesses differ between models, so pick the right unit from the start.

Consider GEN2 TRACK instead of RACE if…

  • Native EGT inputs are not important to you. GEN2 TRACK spends its pins differently: instead of 8 thermocouple inputs you get more of everything else — 16 analog inputs, 6 pulse inputs, 8 low-side outputs, 4 × +12 V outputs and 4 H-bridge outputs. EGT is still possible through 0–5 V amplifiers.
  • You want dual wideband lambda — per-bank measurement, with Bosch LSU 5.2 support.
  • You want dual knock inputs and dual CAN.
  • You need two electronic throttle bodies — RACE can do it in principle, but the second throttle uses up two analog inputs and inputs tend to run short.
  • You run more than 3 bar of boost — 550 kPa MAP sensor (4.5 bar / 65 PSI) against RACE's 400 kPa.
  • The ECU lives somewhere wet — IP68 and Superseal connectors as standard, no separate variant.
  • You want WiFi tuning, USB-C, 8 GB of logging covering all 2000+ channels at 1000 Hz, Lua scripting and 8× larger tables.
  • Weight matters — 545 g against 880 g.

For more than 8 cylinders, or more than 8 injectors, the step is PRO or GEN2 RACE.

What to buy alongside a MaxxECU RACE

MaxxECU RACE kit boxed with harnesses, wideband sensors, manuals and connectors

  • Harness 2 — the RACE STANDARD kit ships with harness 1 only. Knock, E-Throttle and EGT live on harness 2. The PREMIUM kit includes both plus an LSU 4.2 sensor.
  • Pressure sensors — oil pressure and fuel pressure are the two we would fit to every engine. Both can be logged and used for engine protection.
  • Temperature sensors — oil temperature, intake air temperature, gearbox or differential temperature, depending on how many inputs you have free.
  • EGT sensors — TYPE-K probes and weld-in fittings for the native thermocouple inputs, one per cylinder if you want full coverage.
  • Knock sensors — the knock inputs need hardware to listen with.
  • Flex fuel sensor — if the car will see E85 or varying ethanol blends.
  • Wideband lambda sensor — already included in the kits that come with a harness. You only need to buy a Bosch LSU sensor separately if you order the unit on its own.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between MaxxECU RACE and RACE H2O?

Identical electronics and features. The H2O is built in a fully waterproof package for powersports and exposed installations, and it is fine to mount in the engine bay. Both are available as unit-only or as a PREMIUM kit with harnesses, accessories and an LSU 4.2 sensor.

What is the difference between MaxxECU RACE and GEN2 TRACK?

Both run 8 sequential cylinders. RACE has 8 native TYPE-K EGT inputs. GEN2 TRACK uses those pins for other things: if EGT is not important, it gives you more other inputs and outputs, plus IP68, WiFi, 550 kPa MAP, dual wideband with LSU 5.2 support, dual knock, dual CAN, dual E-Throttle capability, 8 GB full-channel logging and Lua scripting. EGT on a GEN2 TRACK goes through 0–5 V amplifiers; GEN2 RACE has 8 built-in channels at 200 Hz.

Does MaxxECU RACE include the EGT harness?

The 8 EGT inputs are on a separate harness. The STANDARD kit includes harness 1 only; harness 2 carries knock, E-Throttle and EGT. The PREMIUM kit includes both harnesses.

How many knock sensors can MaxxECU RACE use?

Two, on a dedicated knock processor separate from the main CPU and the trigger processor.

Can MaxxECU RACE run two electronic throttle bodies?

In principle yes, but the second throttle body takes two analog inputs with it, and on a RACE that often leaves you short of inputs. If two throttle bodies are planned, we recommend GEN2 TRACK, GEN2 RACE or PRO from the start.

Is MaxxECU RACE still worth buying now that GEN2 exists?

Yes. It is the most popular MaxxECU for a reason: 8 thermocouple EGT channels wired straight in, knock control, and the lower price of a mature, well-documented platform with an enormous installed base.
