How much it costs to build a project car?

We can certainly provide you with an initial estimate, but predicting the exact final cost upfront is nearly impossible.

Because every vehicle has its own unique history, wear, and hidden issues, the final price tag will evolve as the build progresses.

Think of it like renovating an old wooden house > you can walk around the property and draw up a solid initial estimate based on what you see. However, the reality often changes once you start removing the floors and tearing down the plaster. You never fully know what surprises are waiting underneath until you start taking things apart! Because of this, our initial quote is a baseline estimate.

How much for an engine swap?

The cost of an engine swap is highly variable and depends entirely on the specific details of your build. To give you an accurate estimate, we look at three main factors:

  • The Engine and Chassis Combination: Some swaps are native and straightforward, while others require heavy modifications. For example, dropping a BMW M54 engine into a BMW E46 318 is a relatively simple, bolt-in process, making it much cheaper. On the other hand, custom-fitting a Honda K20 engine into a Mazda RX-8 requires a lot of metal fabrication—such as cutting the firewall to physically make it fit—along with complex wiring and extensive problem-solving, which significantly drives up the cost.

  • The Standard of the Build: The biggest question with any engine swap is how properly you want it done. Are we just dropping in an engine with old, half-worn parts from a donor car, or are we doing it right? When an engine is already out, it is the perfect time to freshen it up and replace components that have been ravaged by time. At our workshop, our standard is to always replace certain critical wear-and-tear items with brand-new parts during a swap to ensure long-term reliability.

  • Transmission Compatibility: An important nuance that affects the price is the transmission logic. We need to know if the donor engine and your car use the same setup (automatic-to-automatic or manual-to-manual). Mixing them up—like putting an engine from an automatic car into a manual chassis—adds extra steps, parts, and labor to the job.

The Bottom Line: Because of all these moving parts, there is no one-size-fits-all price. Once we know exactly what engine is going into what chassis, and the level of restoration you want while the engine is out, we can provide a much more accurate estimate.

How much does it cost to install aftermarket ECU like MaxxECU?

Just like an engine swap or a restoration, the total cost of installing a standalone ECU depends heavily on your specific car, the engine setup, and your ultimate goals. Because of the many variables involved, any initial quote we provide will always be a ballpark estimate, never a perfectly precise final price.

The total cost generally breaks down into four main factors:

  • The ECU Unit Itself: Brands like MaxxECU offer a wide range of models. A basic street car setup might only need an entry-level unit, whereas a fully built, high-horsepower engine requiring traction control, electronic throttle, and extensive data logging will need a top-tier motorsport ECU. Naturally, the hardware costs vary accordingly.
  • The Wiring Harness (Labor): This is often the biggest variable in the installation cost. If a "Plug-and-Play" adapter harness exists for your specific engine and chassis, the physical installation is relatively quick and cost-effective. However, if we need to build a custom wiring harness from scratch, it requires dozens of hours of meticulous planning, cutting, crimping, routing, and testing, which heavily impacts the labor cost.
  • Additional Sensors: Factory sensors aren't always compatible or accurate enough for a high-performance standalone ECU. You usually need to factor in the cost of crucial upgrades, such as a Wideband oxygen sensor, a new MAP sensor, an Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor, and potentially extras like a flex-fuel sensor or electronic boost controller.
  • Dyno Tuning: Getting the ECU wired in and the car starting is only half the battle! A new ECU comes as a "blank slate." Because we offer in-house dyno tuning, we handle this entire process from start to finish. We will strap your car to our dyno and custom-map the ECU to ensure the engine idles properly, drives smoothly, runs safely, and makes optimal power.

The Bottom Line: A simple plug-and-play installation on a common engine will be much more budget-friendly, while a custom-wired motorsport build with a high-end ECU and an array of new sensors is a major investment.
