MaxxECU RACE and RACE H2O: Knock Control, EGT and Eight Sequential Cylinders
MaxxECU RACE and RACE H2O: Knock Control, EGT and Eight Sequential Cylinders
Quick answer: MaxxECU RACE is the motorsport-grade GEN1 unit and the first model in the range with knock sensor inputs and native EGT inputs. It runs up to 8 cylinders fully sequentially (up to 12 in wasted spark) with 8 peak-and-hold injector outputs at 8 A each, 8 ignition outputs, 9 low-side general-purpose outputs, 2 × +12 V sourcing outputs and 4 motor outputs capable of dual E-Throttle. It has 2 knock sensor inputs, 8 TYPE-K/N EGT inputs to 1200 °C in a separate harness, a built-in Bosch LSU 4.2/4.9 wideband, a built-in 400 kPa MAP sensor and Bluetooth for MDash. Weight is 880 g. A fully waterproof RACE H2O variant is available for marine and harsh-environment use.
Rocket Speed Shop is the official MaxxECU distributor for the Baltics. Below: what RACE adds over SPORT, and how it compares to the newer GEN2 TRACK.
Who the MaxxECU RACE is for
- High-boost engines on pump fuel or E85 where knock detection is not optional. Two knock sensor inputs run on their own processor, separate from the main CPU and the trigger processor.
- V8 builds running fully sequentially — 8 injector and 8 ignition outputs. LS, Coyote, M60/M62, 1UZ/2UZ/3UZ.
- Engines where per-cylinder exhaust gas temperature matters — 8 thermocouple inputs wired straight in, sampled at 50 Hz, with EGT fuel correction and EGT-based power cut. On a high-power turbo build this catches a lean cylinder before it destroys a piston.
- Drift, time attack, drag and circuit cars that need spare I/O for sensors, switches and safety strategies. Four extra digital/VR inputs handle four wheel speed sensors for real traction control.
- Marine, offshore, rally raid and open-wheel applications — the RACE H2O variant is built waterproof.
- Builds with two throttle bodies — four motor outputs support dual E-Throttle.
Key features
Knock detection and control
Two knock sensor inputs handled by a dedicated processor. Knock control lets you run closer to optimal ignition timing safely, and pull timing automatically when detonation is detected rather than leaving a permanent safety margin on the table. This is the feature that separates RACE from everything below it.
Eight native EGT inputs
TYPE-K and TYPE-N thermocouples to 1200 °C / 2200 °F, supplied on a separate harness, sampled at 50 Hz — wired straight into the ECU with no amplifiers needed. Feeds EGT fuel correction (adds fuel when a cylinder runs hot) and EGT power cut (protects the engine when a threshold is crossed). Per-cylinder EGT is the fastest way to find an injector or ignition problem on a big turbo engine.

Eight peak-and-hold injector outputs
8 A per output, one or two high or low impedance injectors per output. Injector staging is supported, so a big-power build can run primary and secondary injectors from one ECU.
Four motor outputs and dual E-Throttle
GPO 11–14 (2 A each) drive electronic throttle bodies or other motors. Enough for two independent throttle bodies, or one throttle plus other motorised control.
Large I/O count
9 low-side outputs (GPO 1–8 and 10 at 2 A, GPO 9 at 5 A), 2 × +12 V sourcing outputs (GPO 15, 16 at 2 A), 6 extra 0–5 V analog inputs, 4 extra digital inputs of which the VR-capable ones suit wheel speed sensors, 2 extra temperature sensors, plus dedicated IAT, CLT and TPS. Analog inputs sample at up to 1000 Hz.
RACE H2O waterproof variant

Same electronics and same features in a fully water-protected package for marine, powersports and exposed installations.
Bluetooth, logging and gearbox control
Built-in Bluetooth for the MDash Android dashboard. 8 MB internal logging at up to 1000 Hz. CAN control of BMW DCT, VAG DSG and GEN1 ZF 8HP, direct solenoid control of GM 4L60E/4L65E/4L80E/4L85E and Toyota A340E/A341E/A650E, plus sequential gearbox control with shift-cut.

Should you upgrade or downgrade?
Downgrade to SPORT if…
Your engine has 6 cylinders or fewer, you are not running enough boost to worry about detonation, and per-cylinder EGT is a nice-to-have rather than a requirement. MaxxECU SPORT keeps E-Throttle, Bluetooth, peak-and-hold drivers and the built-in wideband in a smaller, lighter, cheaper package. You give up knock inputs, EGT inputs, 2 cylinders of sequential capability, 2 motor outputs, 4 digital inputs and a lot of spare outputs.
Downgrade to STREET if…
Cable throttle, high-impedance injectors, 6 cylinders or fewer. MaxxECU STREET is the honest budget answer for a straightforward turbo street build.
Upgrade to GEN2 TRACK if…
You want the same 8 sequential cylinders on the current-generation platform. MaxxECU GEN2 TRACK brings a genuinely different hardware generation: IP68 waterproofing as standard, WiFi tuning, a 550 kPa MAP sensor (4.5 bar / 65 PSI versus RACE's 3 bar), dual wideband lambda with Bosch LSU 5.2 support, dual knock, 16 analog inputs, 6 pulse inputs, a 3-axis accelerometer, dual CAN, Superseal connectors, USB-C, an ARM dual-core CPU, 8 GB of logging covering all 2000+ channels at 1000 Hz, Lua scripting and 8× larger tables. It also weighs 545 g against RACE's 880 g. The one thing GEN2 TRACK lacks is native TYPE-K EGT inputs — it reads EGT through 0–5 V amplifiers on its analog inputs instead, or you step up to GEN2 RACE for 8 built-in thermocouple channels. Existing GEN1 tunes are compatible with GEN2.
Upgrade to PRO if…
You need more channels on the GEN1 platform: 12 sequential cylinders, 16 injector outputs, 12 ignition outputs, 12 EGT inputs, 30 general-purpose outputs, 22 analog inputs, 10 digital inputs, dual CAN, dual wideband and dual E-Throttle, with a built-in accelerometer and advanced drag racing functions. MaxxECU PRO is the GEN1 flagship.
Upgrade to GEN2 RACE if…
You want everything. MaxxECU GEN2 RACE combines 12 sequential cylinders, 16 injector outputs, 12 ignition outputs, 8 native EGT inputs at 200 Hz, dual wideband, dual knock, 24 analog inputs, 8 pulse inputs, IP68, WiFi and 16 GB of logging. It is the top of the range.
What to buy alongside a MaxxECU RACE

- MaxxECU PDM20 — 20 programmable, current-monitored, PWM-capable outputs handling up to 230 A, replacing fuses and relays entirely. Configured from MTune over CAN. On a dedicated race car this removes a whole category of failure and lets you build kill-switch and pit-lane strategies in software.
- MaxxECU Expansion Module — adds 12 analog inputs, 4 pulse inputs, 4 × 12 V outputs at 5 A and 4 H-bridges at up to 15 A over CAN. Note that only one module is supported on GEN1 ECUs like RACE using the pre-defined configuration.
- Knock sensors and EGT thermocouples — the RACE's headline features need hardware. Budget for two knock sensors and up to eight TYPE-K probes with bungs.
- Harness 2 — the RACE STANDARD kit ships with harness 1 only. Knock, E-Throttle and EGT live on harness 2. The PREMIUM kit includes both plus an LSU 4.2 sensor.
- Terminated engine harness — 2JZ, BMW M50, Volvo T5 and GM LS.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between MaxxECU RACE and RACE H2O?
Identical electronics and features. The H2O is built in a fully waterproof package for marine, powersports and exposed installations. Both are available as unit-only or as a PREMIUM kit with harnesses, accessories and an LSU 4.2 sensor.
What is the difference between MaxxECU RACE and GEN2 TRACK?
Both run 8 sequential cylinders. GEN2 TRACK is the newer platform: IP68, WiFi, 550 kPa MAP, dual wideband with LSU 5.2 support, dual knock, dual CAN, 8 GB full-channel logging, Lua scripting, dual-core CPU and 545 g weight. RACE has 8 native TYPE-K EGT inputs; GEN2 TRACK has none and needs a 0–5 V amplifier per channel, or you go to GEN2 RACE for 8 built-in channels at 200 Hz.
Does MaxxECU RACE include the EGT harness?
The 8 EGT inputs are on a separate harness. The STANDARD kit includes harness 1 only; harness 2 carries knock, E-Throttle and EGT. The PREMIUM kit includes both harnesses.
How many knock sensors can MaxxECU RACE use?
Two, on a dedicated knock processor separate from the main CPU and the trigger processor.
Can MaxxECU RACE run a V12?
In wasted spark, yes — up to 12 cylinders. Fully sequential V12 needs PRO or GEN2 RACE.
Is MaxxECU RACE still worth buying now that GEN2 exists?
Yes, in two situations: you want 8 thermocouple EGT channels wired straight in without paying for a GEN2 RACE, or you want the lower price of a mature, well-documented GEN1 platform with an enormous installed base. GEN1 tunes are compatible with GEN2, so a later upgrade is not a rewrite.
